Invar 36®
Invar® 36 is a nickel-iron alloy with a dark, dull-gray color. INVAR® 36 is a 36% nickel to 64% iron alloy. This nickel iron alloy is both tough and versatile, retaining high strength at cryogenic temperatures.
INVAR® 36 Properties and Appearance
Invar® 36 belongs with the low expansion alloys, with a thermal expansion 1/10th of carbon steel at temperatures up to 400° F. Invar® 36 alloy maintains its strength at cryogenic temperatures and has nearly constant dimensions from sub-zero temperatures to about 500° F. Because of its small coefficient of thermal expansion INVAR® 36 is generally thought of as a good choice for any type of low expansion application requiring high dimensional stability such as the manufacturing of precision instruments. INVAR® 36 can be hot and cold formed and is both readily machinable and weldable.
